Eeoc Finds Bias Against White Males
BEND, Ore.
The federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has ruled the Forest Service discriminated against white males in its effort to increase the numbers of women and minority smokejumpers at the Redmond Air Center.
In a 25-page decision, the commission found the Forest Service violated the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by failing to hire Charles Bragdon of Baltimore, Md., as a smokejumper in 1987.
The decision reverses a Forest Service finding that no discrimination occurred in the Bragdon case and revises the commission's previous decision that discrimination at the firefighting base occurred only on the basis of race.
