Hilger Impressed With Seahawks' Run And Shoot
Quarterback Rusty Hilger, signed yesterday because of the holdout absence of Dave Krieg, said General Manager Tom Flores told him, ``to come in here and take every snap like it's your last one . . . and compete for the starting job.''
Hilger played last week, ``just to stay in shape,'' with the minor-league Oklahoma City Twisters.
Hilger, who was with Detroit while the run and shoot was being installed, said the Seahawk application of that offense is impressive. ``It's a heck of a thing to learn in a short time,'' he said. ``But you're going to be amazed at what they'll do with it. It's going to be a very productive offense.''
NOTES
-- The first-unit receivers in the run-and-shoot offense yesterday were Brian Blades, Paul Skansi, Jeff Chadwick and Louis Clark. Tommy Kane, who underwent knee surgery last year, is being brought along slowly.
-- Defensive tackle Eric Hayes of Florida State, the team's fifth-round draft pick, easily was the standout of one-on-one pass-rush drills yesterday. He showed quickness and strength against Bryan Millard, one of the AFC West's best guards.
-- It was erroneously reported that defensive end Jacob Green was involved in an altercation Friday with offensive tackle Bill Hitchcock. Another end, Elston Ridgle, tangled with Hitchcock. Hitchcock holds a black belt in karate; Ridgle also is a martial-arts expert.
INJURIES, ILLNESSES
-- Offensive tackle Andy Heck missed practice because of a touch of flu, fullback John L. Williams was held out of drills in the afternoon after being poked in the eye.
CUTS
-- Tight end Rodd Olson of Washington State was released yesterday to make room for Hilger.
