Klingler Slings 11 Tds Vs. Ewu -- Houston Qb Stars As Eagles Fall 84-21
AP
HOUSTON - David Klingler set an NCAA record with 11 touchdown passes and tied the NCAA record of 47 touchdown passes in a season, leading 12th ranked Houston to an 84-21 victory over Eastern Washington yesterday.
Klingler hit 13 of 14 first-quarter passes and directed Houston to touchdowns on its first six drives of the game. He continued the assault with a 21-point third quarter.
He was replaced with 8:24 left by freshman Tim McCauley and finished with 41 completions on 58 attempts for 572 yards.
Houston extended its Astrodome winning streak to 14. The Cougars will close out their season Dec. 1 against Arizona State in Tokyo.
It was the most points allowed by Eastern Washington since losing to the Washington State freshman team 81-0 in 1922.
The Cougars, whose 12-game winning streak was snapped last week by Texas, burst to a 42-14 halftime lead on Klingler's touchdown passes, including two each to Chuck Weatherspoon and Manny Hazard and one each to John Brown III and Tracy Good.
Klingler hit touchdowns of 40 yards to Verlon Brown, 8 yards to Patrick Cooper and 7 yards to Patrick Cooper in the 21-point third quarter to tie the NCAA record of nine TD passes in a game by San Diego State's Dennis Shaw in 1969.
The record came with 13:35 left on an 8-yard touchdown pass to TiAndre Sanders following a 57-yard punt return by Weatherspoon. Klingler's 51-yard pass to Marcus Grant with 12:40 left in the game
tied the NCAA mark of 47 touchdown passes in a season, set by Brigham Young's Jim McMahon in 1980.
-- IDAHO 21, AT BOISE ST. 14 - Junior running back Devon Pearce rushed for 226 yards and two touchdowns as the Vandals beat the Broncos.
