Copter Rescues Three Who Abandon Vessel

Times Staff: AP

PRINCE RUPERT, B.C.

Three people were rescued by a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter last night after abandoning their 132-foot chartered fishing vessel in Hecate Strait after it became awash in heavy seas.

The survivors were en route to a hospital at Sandspit in the Queen Charlotte Islands. There was no word on their conditions.

All three had abandoned ship and were rescued from a life raft in the stormy strait between the British Columbia mainland and the Queen Charlotte Islands.

A Canadian Coast Guard radio operator in Prince Rupert could not say the port of registry of the vessel identified as the Norsal.
