Thursday Memo

Sniffing Around

Sniffing around

Corky, the gas-sniffing Labrador retriever, is on the job at The Washington Water Power Co., trying to sniff out natural-gas leaks.

The 3-year-old pooch is part of an experiment to see if dogs can find gas leaks more quickly than inspectors armed with electronic gear.

How does Corky signal that she's found a leak? ``Her tail stands up, the hair on her back bristles and, as she moves closer to the scent, she sniffs intensely and digs with great excitement,'' says her handler.

The ``Memo'' columns run on Mondays and Thursdays in the Business

Section.
