Giants Update
NOTES -- Everett Manager Rob Ellis has been concerned about his pitching staff, which has suffered five injuries to its 12-man pitching corp. Yesterday's Giants starter, Brian McLeod, was sent to Everett from Class A Clinton of the Midwest League.
McLeod, who pitched in Everett last year, was sent to the short-season club partly to help out the injured staff and partly to work out some control problems. He was 2-4 at Clinton with a 5.89 ERA.
The Giants have also added newly signed Tony Prentice, a right-handed relief pitcher from Portland State University.
"I think we're at least a couple days away from being okay," Ellis said. "We just didn't have anyone fresh down in the bullpen."
Jarod Juelsgaard, who came on in relief of McLeod in yesterday's 11-8 victory over Yakima, was pitching for the second straight day.
-- Ellis said he is amazed that Tim Florez is hitting .156.
"He's up there being very aggressive," Ellis said. "Usually when you're that aggressive, you'll usually hit at least .200 or .225. I hope this means that the law of averages will take over and he'll have some hits start to fall in." -- Everett, 9-8, is tied with Spokane for first place in the Northwest League's Northern Division standings, and the two teams open a two-game series tonight in Spokane.
-- The Giants will be home Monday for a doubleheader with Bellingham. The second of two seven-inning games is a make-up for a rained-out game during the first week of the season.
-- For the past week, the Giants have neither won nor lost two games in a row.
-- Yesterday's crowd of 4,119 is a team record. The day featured a promotion with KING-TV that allowed fans to attend the game free if they mentioned the name of that station's lead sportscaster. However, team owner Bob Bavasi said only between 30 and 40 percent of the crowd got in free. The rest were paying customers.
