Build A Light-Rail System Through City, Panel Says
FEDERAL WAY
Any light-rail system built in the region should pass through Federal Way along Highway 99, rather than Interstate 5, to give riders easier access to businesses and homes.
That's the consensus of the City Council, which adopted a resolution urging Metro to place light rail on Highway 99 between Federal Way and SeaTac.
Metro planners currently envision the line along I-5 between Seattle and Tacoma.
The agency is looking at developing a light-rail system in Puget Sound and is considering asking voters for funding in November 1992.
Several residents at the Tuesday council meeting spoke in favor of developing light rail along Highway 99.
One citizen, Dale Roper, suggested I-5 might be a more central location if the city annexed the unincorporated area east of the freeway.
Councilman Jim Handmacher said it was important for the city to make its preference known at a time Metro is considering where light rail should be located.
