Teds Moves Ahead
TEDS ain't dead. That group of Boeing technical employees sounding a call to cecede from the Seattle Professional Engineering Employees Association (SPEEA) has been relatively quiet for a couple of months. But last week, members of Technical Employees in Disagreement with SPEEA (TEDS) began circulating a letter asking technical workers to declare a preference for either jumping ship to the larger aerospace machinists union or taking steps to decertify SPEEA altogether.
Roughly 9,000 of SPEEA's 29,000 members are technical employees who complain that they are drastically underpaid compared to full-fledged engineers. Naturally, SPEEA leaders want to keep the technicians in the fold. TED leader Vincent Larson grouses that Boeing supervisors have attempted to thwart TEDS activism.
