Cruel Treatment -- Stampede And Suicide Race In Omak Is No Way To Treat Horses
On Aug. 7, 8 and 9, another Stampede and Suicide Race will be run at the Omak Rodeo. Twenty mounted horses will be stampeded across a plain at full gallop, to a bluff crowning a precipice. There is no way for the horses to escape. They must leap down the precipice. Then, as they are able, they must swim the Okanogan River which flows at the base of the precipice, and proceed, at full gallop, to the finish line in the Rodeo Arena.
This is the show that is put on for the "amusement" of the tourists. Many tourists complain that they do not enjoy watching this cruel treatment of horses, and have deep feelings of revulsion and pity. Is it justifiable to put horses through such stress, and agony, and risk of physical injury, or even death, for the "amusement" of the tourist - or for any reason? This is no way to treat a horse.
There appears to be no way to stop these Suicide Races except to make them illegal. Please write your member of Congress. - Elsie G. McFarling, Seattle
