Federal Aid To Help Lift Forks Out Of Economic Slump
Seattle Times Staff: Seattle Times News Services
FORKS - When logging in the national forests was shut down by court injunction, beleagured timber communities were promised government help in developing new businesses. After two years of struggle, it appears the promise is coming true for Forks.
The Olympic Peninsula community is combining $2.5 million in federal and state aid with a $3 million commitment from Portac Inc. to put roads and utilities into an industrial park and create a planing and drying mill that could provide wood for secondary industries such as furniture manufacturing.
"This will provide an environment for more entrepreneurial activity," said Sanda Kint, director of the Forks Economic Development Committee. Other manufacturers are expected to use the wood produced by the Portac mill.
Construction is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.
The town's current unemployment rate is 19 perceant, Kint said.
