American Legion Baseball -- Centralia Loses Regional Opener

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Salem scored seven times in the first four innings and went on to beat Centralia 8-5 last night in the opening round of the Senior American Legion Northwest Regional baseball tournament.

The loss knocked the Washington state champion into the loser's bracket. Centralia (40-20) plays Meridian, Idaho, at 9:35 a.m. today at Taylor Field.

Sweetwater County of Wyoming beat Meridian 5-2 in yesterday's opening game. In another games, Missoula, Mont., edged Chugiak, Alaska, 5-4.

Corvallis, the host team, beat Lodi, Calif., 2-1 last night.

Jake Underwood went 3 for 5 to lead Salem's 11-hit attack against three Centralia pitchers. Salem (34-20), the Oregon state champion, won despite four errors.

Ron Murphy and Scott Krause each had two hits for Centralia.

The Yardbirds led 2-1 after one inning, but Salem took the lead for good with a two-run second.

The regional tournament continues through Tuesday.
