Memorial Tonight For 3 Mckinley Climbers

Memorial services for three local climbers who died May 23 or 24 on Alaska's Mount McKinley are scheduled for 7 tonight at The Mountaineers, 300 Third Ave. W.

One Step at a Time (OSAT) climbing and mountaineering club is staging the gathering to honor Jim Hinkhouse, 52, of Bellevue; Scott Hall, 34, Arlington, Snohomish County, and Thomas Downey, 52, Ephrata, Grant County.

The men - all experienced climbers - left Seattle May 5 but delayed their ascent until May 8 because of poor weather, said OSAT publicist Karen Christensen.

"We're still waiting for a death certificate because the medical examiner in Anchorage is waiting for extra information from the mountain rangers and the rescue party," Christensen said. "But the last entry in their journal was May 23."

A fund was created to help the climbers' families, to place plaques at Tiger Mountain and Mount McKinley and to continue OSAT's work.

Donations may be sent to Denali Climbers Memorial Fund, 1540 Palm Ave. S.W., Seattle, WA, 98116.
