Prep Golf -- 5 Returnees Expect To Help Seattle Prep Keep Boys Title

Seattle Prep, which returns all five golfers from its Class AA state boys championship team, is favored to retain its title.

Ian Fliflet, a senior, led Panthers Nobu Shirakata, Mike Sinkula, Kyle Taylor and Carson Rasmussen last year. Fliflet was the highest scoring Metro League finisher at state.

Prep also returns five golfers from its Metro girls championship team.

"We've got a lot of good kids - it's so hard to name just one," Prep Coach Dennis Olson said. "We've got some very talented golfers who won't compete at state because you can only take five . . . We've got depth."

Eastside Catholic, which finished fourth in Metro last season, is expected to push Prep for the league title. The Crusaders return their top five players from last year and add highly touted freshman David Zajak.

"I would predict that these two teams will finish first and second in state," Crusader Coach Tim Reilly said. "Prep has a lot of depth, but we've got good depth also. It will be a real nice competition, especially because the kids all know each other."

Barton goes for three

Rebecca Barton tries to win her third consecutive Metro League title. The Blanchet junior could become the first Metro girl to win four league titles in at least the past 15 years.

"She's going to have her work cut out for her this year because of those gals from Seattle Prep," Blanchet Coach Jerry Riedinger said. "Prep has about four of five girls that could really give Becca some trouble."

Barton shot a 36-over 176 at Jefferson last year. She shot 188 to win the Metro title as a freshman.

Metro AAA to state

Despite being Class AAA teams, Garfield, Franklin and Roosevelt will play a Metro League AA schedule.

After the regular season, golfers from those teams will receive an undetermined number of berths to a nearby district, Garfield Coach Tony Fore said.

"There's really not much difference in golf between AA and AAA, especially at the state level," Fore said. "In AA, you see more private schools, so you see a pretty well-rounded group of golfers."

Metro Notes

-- Holy Names Academy will compete in golf for the first time in the school's history.

"We're willing to offer it because there was considerable interest from the girls in school," Cougar Athletic Director Kery Boyle said. "It's finally nice to be competing in virtually all the Metro League sports now."

Holy Names does not offer gymnastics.

-- Garfield's golf coach is named, aptly enough, Tony Fore. His friends call him T. Fore.

"I've heard all the jokes," he said. "The kids call me Mr. Three . . . if they yell out my name on a golf course, they would have everybody ducking." ----------------------------------------------------------------- METRO LEAGUE GOLFERS TO WATCH
