Seattle Opera's `Carmen' Wins Support In Phone Poll

Arts & Entertainment Editor

The proponents of daring win.

Last Sunday, in response to controversy over Seattle Opera's recent production of "Carmen" - which some had criticized as brutal and overly sexual - we asked you to call our telephone poll to vote.

We asked you to choose one of these statements:

-- This "Carmen" may be shocking, but art should be provocative. Bravo, Seattle Opera!

-- The sexuality and brutality of this "Carmen" go too far. Shame on you, Seattle Opera!

The results? Despite vehement protests of some, the cutting-edge production found favor with a majority of callers. "Bravo!" said 672 callers; "shame!" got 515 votes.
