Korea-War Vet Calls Cooley A Liar
PORTLAND - U.S. Rep. Wes Cooley's claims of wartime service in Korea have been disputed by what appears to be the only man the Eastern Oregon Republican has named who could back up the assertions.
Cooley, 64, has said he served in Korea under a sergeant named Poppy.
The Oregonian today quoted former Army Master Sgt. Clifford Lee Poppy as saying he and Cooley never served together in Korea.
"Tell him he's a liar. Tell him Sergeant Poppy said that," said Poppy, who now lives in Phoenix.
Cooley, who is seeking a second term, has made misstatements about his marriage and his educational background, and federal authorities are investigating whether his wife improperly received widow's veterans benefits.
