Horse In Omak Stampede Killed By Injection, Says Paws
Seattle Times Staff: Seattle Times News Services
OMAK - A horse injured during the Omak Stampede's Suicide Race was killed with a lethal injection, an animal-welfare organization said yesterday.
An investigator for the Progressive Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) witnessed and videotaped the scene during Saturday night's competition, the Lynnwood-based organization said. Race organizers could not be reached to confirm PAWS' account.
PAWS has tried repeatedly to block the Suicide Race, in which horses and riders plummet down an embankment, swim across the Okanogan River and race into a rodeo arena.
After other horses plunged into the river, one that apparently had broken its left front leg stopped 30 feet above the water, PAWS investigator Will Anderson said, and as spectators watched, a veterinarian gave the horse an injection.
Anderson, arrested by Okanogan County sheriff's deputies for trespassing, was later released.
