PORTLAND - A woman fatally shot by a police officer after she fired a handgun at a paramedic has been identified by police as Patricia Sweany, 45, of Welches.

Paramedics called police for help Saturday morning in dealing with Sweany, who they believed was psychotic, police said yeterday.

When an officer arrived on the scene in southeast Portland, Sweany pulled out a handgun and fired at ambulance attendant Kirk Wayne Ream, 39, of Aurora. The bullet struck his keychain.

Officer Scott Westerman, 30, returned fire and the woman was killed.

Westerman, a five-year veteran with the Portland Police Bureau, was placed on administrative leave pending a routine investigation.
