Sonic Report Orlando 101, Seattle 89 -- Schrempf To Be Out At Least Three Weeks
Detlef Schrempf, Seattle's All-Star forward, will be out at least another three weeks because of a partial tear of the peroneal tendon in his left foot, Sonic General Manager Wally Walker said today.
Schrempf was placed on the injured list last Friday.
"Our goal is to error on the conservative side," Walker said after hearing from team physicians.
Schrempf's roster spot probably will be filled by Guard David Wingate, who is expected to come off the injured list Friday.
Notes
-- Sonic Coach George Karl probably meant no harm.
The words he uttered after Seattle beat Orlando on Sunday weren't intended to sting. But it seems the coach raised the ire of the Orlando Magic.
It really wasn't much - two paragraphs in Monday's Orlando Sentinel. Karl was talking about the trouble the Magic was having in replacing Shaquille O'Neal.
"(Penny) Hardaway and Rony Seikaly know where they're going to play," Karl was quoted as saying. "The other guys, I don't know. They don't seem to have a lot of definition. Anytime you take a guy like (O'Neal) off your team, your personality is hard to figure out."
The problem the players had with Karl's remarks came when he explained that the best teams have two stars with others playing "subservient roles." Apparently the rest of the players didn't like being considered "subservient."
"I love him as a coach and I respect him," Orlando's Nick Anderson said. "But we've been talking about this since Monday."
Notes
-- Larry Stewart, starting in place of Schrempf, had nine points in the first quarter and 12 points for the game.
-- Nike has filed a lawsuit against rival Champion Products Inc. alleging Gary Payton's endorsement of Champion athletic apparel violates Payton's contract with Nike.
