Many of the top high-school senior boys basketball players in the Puget Sound area will play in a four-team tournament Friday and Saturday at Renton High School.

The South King County boys will play a KingCo Conference team at 6 p.m. and Metro will play WesCo at 7:30.

This is the third year of the tournament, sponsored by Shoreline AAU and Nike.

Adult tickets cost $5 a night or $8 for a two-day pass. Student tickets are $3 a day or $5 for two days.

Two players will receive $500 scholarships based on performance, community involvement and grade-point average.

Shorewood coach named

Tom Bainter, offensive coordinator at Mount Si High School in Snoqualmie the past three years, has been named Shorewood High's new football coach.

The selection was announced after a three-month search, said Sue Walker, Shorewood vice principal and athletic director. Ten coaches interviewed for the position.

Bainter will become Shorewood's sixth head football coach since the Shoreline school opened in 1975. He will replace Michael Sherry, who resigned three months ago after coaching the Thunderbirds to two consecutive 2-7 seasons.

Bainter, previously an assistant coach at Inglemoor for two years, was named Seamount League assistant coach of the year in 1994. He is a 1984 graduate of Evergreen High School in Burien and played free safety on the Western Washington University football team.

Note

-- Scott Knight, baseball coach at Stanwood High the past 10 years, got his 300th career victory when the Spartans beat Blaine 9-0 yesterday. Three Stanwood pitchers combined on a four-hitter. This is Knight's 20th year as a high-school head coach.
