William Moore, Former Everett Mayor
EVERETT - To the world that knew him, William E. "Bill" Moore will probably be remembered for his service to his country during World War II and to his community as Everett's longest-serving mayor.
But to those closer to him, Mr. Moore will be remembered for a more-distinguished success - spending as much time as he could with his family.
"There was no one that was loved more," said his daughter-in-law Kathy Moore of Everett. "And he loved us, too. We all knew that."
Mr. Moore died Thursday (May 29) at Providence General Medical Center in Everett following a 10-year bout with cancer. He had celebrated his 76th birthday last Monday.
Born in Tacoma, Mr. Moore moved to the Everett area with his family when he was an infant.
While attending Everett Community College and the University of Washington, he worked at Carruthers and Whitehead furniture store in Everett. He eventually came to own the store.
He was a captain in the Army and commander of a tank division, taking part in the Normandy invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. He received a Silver Star for his service.
On April 9, 1948, Mr. Moore married the former Donna Marie Christensen.
In 1969, he began his career with the Everett City Council, eventually becoming the council's first president.
In 1977, Mr. Moore began what would be three terms as Everett's mayor.
"Everett citizens have lost a good friend, family man and community leader," said Everett Mayor Ed Hansen. "The city of Everett is certainly a better place for the 12 years of Bill Moore's stewardship."
After retiring in 1990, Mr. Moore traveled with his wife and friends to many parts of the country, mostly to Arizona.
His hobbies included fishing, boating, golfing and gardening, but his most cherished moments were spent with his children and nine grandchildren and on long trips with his wife to Japan, Spain and Portugal, Kathy Moore said.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Moore is survived by daughters Sandy O'Banion of Portland and Diane Newberry of Danville, Calif.; sons Greg and Jeff Moore of Everett; and sister Evelyn Vaara of Camano Island.
Funeral services for Mr. Moore are scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, 8717 Seventh Ave. S.E., Everett.
