Search To Resume For Missing Hiker In Eastern Part Of Mt. Rainier Park
Seattle Times Staff Reporter
The search was to continue today for a hiker missing since Wednesday when he failed to return from a photography trip in the eastern section of Mount Rainier National Park.
Chet Hanson, 27, of Wilkeson, Pierce County, is believed to have been carrying large-format-camera equipment when he headed up the Deer Creek Trail from Highway 123, a National Park Service spokesman said. His car was found at the trailhead.
It is not known if Hanson carried warm clothing and survival equipment. He did not leave an itinerary with friends or park officials.
Hanson failed to report for work at Alaska Airlines. The search area has dense forests and rugged terrain between 3,200- and 7,500-foot elevation with nighttime temperatures in the mid-20s to low teens, the spokesman said.
The search began Thursday and has included teams from Tacoma and Olympic Mountain Rescue Councils, Alaska Airlines employees, Explorer Search and Rescue, Northwest Bloodhounds and search dogs from King and Pierce counties.
