Nature Watch For November

Seabirds - including sea ducks, loons and grebes - will be heading to their winter getaways this month, but it won't be a completely carefree holiday. Predators including bald eagles and peregrine falcons are sure to follow their food source. This month the northern Puget Sound coastline should make for a spectacular wildlife show.

What to see: Where to look:

Bald eagles (Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge near Sequim; Port Townsend; Padilla Bay in Skagit County; Kayak Point Regional Park in Snohomish County; Gold Basin Pond along the Mountain Loop Highway).

Peregrine falcons, merlin, sea ducks, red-throated loons, Western red-necked and horned grebes (Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge; Port Townsend; Padilla Bay; Kayak Point Regional Park).

Coho salmon (Gold Basin Pond along the Mountain Loop Highway).

Columbian white-tailed deer, Roosevelt elk (Julia Butler Hansen National Wildlife Refuge, Wahkiakum County).

Gray whales (Migrating along Washington's coast).

Steelhead at the end of the month (Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, Seattle).

Compiled by Keiko Morris and Lisa Pemberton-Butler, Seattle Times staff reporters, from: "Seasonal Guide to the Natural Year: A Month to Month Guide to Natural Events," by James Luther Davis and "Washington Wildlife Viewing Guide," by Joe La Tourrette.
