Suicide-Race Suit Settled
Seattle Times Staff: Seattle Times News Services
YAKIMA - An animal-welfare advocate has settled a lawsuit he filed after his arrest at the 1996 Omak Stampede Suicide horse race for $64,500.
Will Anderson, an advocate for the Progressive Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), sued Okanogan County, the Omak Stampede, and Omak Stampede board member Ted Huber in federal court.
The settlement was reached after a daylong, court-mandated conference in Yakima, PAWS announced Friday.
The payment was split among the defendants, but the amount each would contribute was not disclosed.
Anderson was arrested after the 1996 Omak Suicide Race and charged with trespassing and resisting arrest, but the charges were later dropped.
The race consists of a large field of horses being ridden down a steep hill and across a river.
Anderson had been shooting video footage of an injured horse when deputies led him away, prosecutors said.
As he walked away, he was chased by angry race fans and ran back to authorities for protection - as his own audio recordings later proved. But the deputies wrestled him to the ground and arrested him.
