DOWNEY, Calif. - Jaime Fields, former NFL linebacker who played at the University of Washington, was killed in a car accident by a motorist who ran a red light then fled on foot, police said.

The driver turned himself in last night, about 18 hours after the accident. His name was not immediately available.

Fields, 29, who played for the Kansas City Chiefs, was driving alone in his 1991 BMW 13 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles when the accident occurred at about 2:20 a.m. yesterday.

The other car slammed into the driver's side of Fields' car. Fields was pronounced dead at the scene.

Fields played four UW seasons, including the undefeated 1991 team, and was drafted in the fourth round by the Kansas City Chiefs in 1993. He played for the Chiefs until 1995.

"For the shorter package he had, 5-11 and probably 230 pounds, he brought a lot as far as punch on the football field," said Ron Milus, former UW defensive backs coach. "When he would make sacks, he would kind of quiver on the field."

Said Brett Collins, linebacker who played with Fields at UW, "He was a heck of a football player and a nice guy. It's pretty tragic what happened to him."
