Sides Spar Over Suicide Race

Seattle Times Staff: Seattle Times News Services

OMAK - The board that oversees the Omak Stampede has balked at the Colville Indian Tribes' demands for sharing profits and control of the popular Suicide Race.

Representatives of the tribes, Stampede and city of Omak are scheduled to meet again tomorrow to resolve differences that led to cancellation of this year's Indian encampment and Suicide Race.

Last week Stampede president Fred Winningham read a statement from the board, calling the tribes' requests for half the profits and control of the traditional horse race "unacceptable and nonnegotiable."

The race is a tribal tradition where riders and their horses plunge down a steep bank, swim across the Okanogan River and gallop to the finish line.
