Man Charged In Ax Attack Over Beer

EVERETT - A dispute over a spilled beer led one Marysville man to take a hatchet to another's head, according to Snohomish County prosecutors.

Ben Martinez, 19, was charged yesterday in Snohomish County Superior Court with first-degree assault in the Dec. 11 attack. Prosecutors say Martinez hit Dwight Casady with the ax after the two had argued.

According to prosecutors' charging papers, Martinez told authorities he had spilled a beer, angering Casady and prompting Casady to threaten to kill him. Martinez went into his house, grabbed an ax used for cutting wood, came outside and hit Casady on the left side of his head, the charging papers say.

Casady underwent surgery as a result of the blow, charging papers say.

Martinez was being held in lieu of $25,000 bail in the Snohomish County Jail.
