Anaheim Angel TV announcer Rex Hudler was hospitalized yesterday in Oakland with a ruptured aneurysm and bleeding in the base of the brain.

Hudler, who played 13 seasons in the major leagues, began experiencing headaches while doing a radio talk show from his hotel room Saturday morning. After he completed the show, he contacted paramedics, who took him to the hospital.

He was in stable condition and able to move freely. The cause of the aneurysm was unknown and he was scheduled for additional tests.

Hudler, 40, was in town to broadcast the game against the Athletics with play-by-play announcer Steve Physioc.

"He checked in with me on Saturday morning," Physioc said. "Then later his wife (Jennifer) called me to tell me what happened. He's the most optimistic person I know, and our thoughts are with him."

ANAHEIM: RHP Ismael Valdes was placed on the 15-day DL retroactive to March 29 because of a split nail on the middle finger of his right (pitching) hand.

BALTIMORE: It doesn't appear that RHP Alan Mills will come off the 15-day disabled list when eligible. His fastball topped out at 85 mph during an intrasquad game last week at the minor league complex in Sarasota, Fla. The Orioles are waiting for him to reach 90 mph.

BOSTON: 3B Shea Hillenbrand, who went 2 for 4 yesterday vs. Tampa Bay, has hit safely in all six games.

CHICAGO: With two hits yesterday, C Sandy Alomar Jr. is 5 for 6 lifetime against Tiger right-hander Jeff Weaver.

CLEVELAND: 3B Travis Fryman, who had hoped to come off the DL on Saturday, will remain on it indefinitely because of a strained ligament in his right elbow. Fryman still feels discomfort on certain throws, and is not expected to be back for at least another two weeks

DETROIT: Despite sweeping the White Sox for a 3-2 start, Manager Phil Garner isn't about to say things are looking up. "I'll defer to Sparky (Anderson) on this one," he said. "Let's see how we're doing at 40 games."

KANSAS CITY: LF Mark Quinn had a career-high five RBI. His previous best was four on four occasions, the last on Aug. 3, 2000, at Tampa Bay. He leads the club with three homers and eight RBI after hitting just .164 with no homers and five RBI in spring training

MINNESOTA: RHP Brad Radke (1-0, 1.13 earned-run average) will start his sixth consecutive home opener for the Twins tonight.

NEW YORK: LF Chuck Knoblauch had a chance for a play at the plate in the fourth inning, but his throw from left field bounced about 15 feet short and to the left. He got an assist to end the game, throwing out LF Shannon Stewart at 2B after a flyout by Brian Simmons.

OAKLAND: DH John Jaha, on a rehabilitation assignment in Sacramento, went 2 for 5 with a double Friday but did not play Saturday.

TAMPA BAY: 3B Vinny Castilla is 0 for 17 lifetime against Boston's Pedro Martinez, with 10 strikeouts.

TEXAS: Rusty Greer was 3 for 3 with a walk against Freddy García, increasing his career totals to 8 for 10 against the Seattle right-hander.

TORONTO: LF Shannon Stewart finally went hitless after notching at least a hit in each of his team's first six games.
