Travel notes: Facelift at Long Beach

Visitors to the Long Beach Peninsula this summer will notice some changes taking place in preparation for the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial commemoration beginning in 2003.

The kitschy beach community is sprucing up its streets and parks with some sophisticated touches. Garden planters and trees are being added along Pacific Avenue, Long Beach's main street, and mosaic and tile artwork is nearing completion on the sidewalks along Ocean Beach Boulevard near City Hall.

In the style of 19th-century coastal villages, cedar-shingle façades are being used to tie together the look of new and newly renovated buildings, and neon signs are being taken down to make room for more artistic replacements. Sound too slick? Not to worry. Nostalgic community symbols such as the Long Beach Frying Pan and World's Largest Beach Arch will remain.
