Victor David timeline
Jan. 31, 1997: Linda David is rescued from a rotting sailboat in Everett's Seacrest Marina after a state Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) official calls police, concerned because Victor David would not let the official see his wife. Rescuers find her jammed in the bow of the boat, surrounded by filth and pinned under a computer printer. The state had been paying her husband for years to be her caregiver; he claimed she had multiple sclerosis.
February 1997: Everett police turn the case over to the state. They had questioned Victor David but ultimately let him go.
August 1998: After the case sits inactive for more than a year and a half, the state Attorney General's Office turns it over to Snohomish County.
May 25, 1999: Snohomish County prosecutors charge Victor David with second-degree assault two days after The Seattle Times publishes a story chronicling Linda David's case and the state's handling of it.
Oct. 1, 1999: Seattle attorney David Moody files a claim against DSHS on Linda David's behalf, seeking $55 million as a preliminary step to suing the agency. He filed a lawsuit two months later.
April 26, 2000: DSHS Director Lyle Quasim and his top deputy both announce plans to retire. Quasim had spent much of the past year defending the embattled agency, including its handling of the Linda David case. He cites health concerns as his reason for stepping down.
July 12, 2000: State agrees to an $8.8 million settlement for Linda David, reportedly the largest ever granted by the state to a single individual.
Sept. 18, 2000: Victor David goes on trial for second-degree assault in Snohomish County Superior Court. David, a Canadian citizen, also is charged with being an alien in possession of a firearm.
Oct. 19, 2000: The judge in David's case declares a mistrial after the jury fails to agree on a verdict, splitting 7-5 in favor of acquittal. David is convicted on the weapons charge. The Snohomish County Prosecutor's Office announces within a week that David will be tried again.
April 24, 2001: Victor David's second assault trial begins.
May 21, 2001: A Snohomish County Superior Court jury finds David guilty of second-degree assault.
Aug. 10, 2001: Victor David is sentenced to 10 years in prison.
