YAKIMA — Rachel Strand sank two free throws with 27 seconds left to give second-ranked King's the lead for good as the Knights upset two-time defending champion Brewster 54-51 last night to earn a spot in the championship game of the Class 1A girls state basketball tournament.
King's (25-1) will meet fifth-ranked Colfax (23-4) in today's 9 p.m. championship game. Brewster beat Colfax for last season's title.
Top-ranked Brewster (24-2) will play Coupeville (23-4) today at 5 p.m. for third and sixth places.
Brewster took a 51-50 lead when two-time tournament MVP Jeni Boesel drove in for a layup with 51 seconds remaining.
On the ensuing trip down the court, Boesel was called for a pushing foul, her fifth, with 15 seconds left, sending Strand to the free-throw line. Strand, who finished with 12 points, hit both shots.
The Bears attempted a three-point shot to tie the score, but it missed the mark and Brewster was forced to foul to attempt to get the ball back.
Christina Wikstrom, who led King's with 22 points, sank both her free throws to push the score to the final margin.
Boesel finished with a game-high 26 points, but was held to just 11 in the second half.
