UW crew coach Harville earns national honor
Washington crew coach Jan Harville, who led the Huskies to a two titles at the NCAA championships, has been selected Division I Coach of the Year by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association. Harville was selected for the honor by vote of her coaching peers.
Harville led the Huskies to a second-place finish at the NCAA women's championships.
Notes
• The Washington women's basketball team won two games as it continued its 11-day tour through Australia. The Huskies defeated the Brisbane Capitals 104-78 and the Under-18 South State team 128-78.
Against Brisbane, UW junior center Andrea Lalum scored 21 points. Loree Payne scored 18 and Kellie O'Neill 15. Giuliana Mendiola had 13 points, eight assists and five steals.
In the second game, Lalum had a double-double, with 26 points and 11 rebounds. O'Neill and redshirt sophomore Sarah Keeler each scored 19. Giuliana Mendiola scored 16 and Gioconda Mendiola had 13.
• Seattle University women's soccer star Nichole Sauvageau, a graduate of Renton's Liberty High, has been chosen Great Northwest Athletic Conference female scholar athlete of the year.
Sauvageau led the Redhawks to a share of the inaugural GNAC women's soccer title and earned honors as the league's Player of the Year.
• Stephanie Huffman, a three-time conference champion and All-American in track and field for Seattle Pacific, has been selected as the GNAC female athlete of the year.
• Bill Porter, a PGA teaching pro, from Quincy, earned a berth in the PGA Championship, Aug. 15-18, at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn. He tied for 23rd in the PGA Club Professional Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky.
• Washington State track coach Rick Sloan has been picked as an assistant coach for the United States men's track team competing at the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) World Cup in Madrid, Spain, this fall.
