Roosevelt girls rule Midsummer Nights
Roosevelt beat Sheldon of Eugene, Ore., 51-48 yesterday in the high-school championship game of the Midsummer Nights Madness, concluding a girls basketball tournament that included 383 games over five days at Edmundson Pavilion and three other local gyms.
More than 120 teams from 10 states and Canada participated, and 109 major NCAA college coaches were on hand to scout prospects.
Idaho Elite beat the LaJolla Waves of California 61-59 in double overtime for the All-Star championship. Basketball BC U17s beat Team Alaska 66-42 for the consolation championship, and the Evergreen Express of Aberdeen beat the Seattle Magic 17s 49-46 in the Friendship Tournament.
Notes
• Mike Barnett, a 38-year-old teaching pro who plays out of GolfZone in Arlington, produced a dramatic birdie on the 54th hole to win the $150,000 Rosauers Open Invitational yesterday at Spokane's Indian Canyon Golf Course
Barnett's closing 70 was good enough to erase a two-shot deficit to Jeff Coston of Semiahmoo (Blaine), who led for the tournament's first two days. Barnett finished 67-64-70 — 201.
Coston, who had a 73 yesterday, finished in a tie for second at 202 with Mark Gardner of The Creek at Qualchan (Spokane). Gardner fired a 67 yesterday.
• The U.S. men's eight claimed a gold medal and the U.S. women's quadruple sculls won a bronze on the final day of competition at the Zurich Rowing World Cup event in Lucerne, Switzerland.
The men's eight, which included Oregon State rower Joey Hansen, finished 1.12 seconds ahead of second-place Germany with a time of 5:28.68.
The women's quadruple sculls crew included Sarah Jones of Stanwood and Laura Rauchfuss of Seattle. The quartet clocked a 6:20.60 to finish behind Ukraine and Germany. Portia Johnson of Seattle was in a boat that finished fifth in the women's pair.
• Candy Robertson knocked out Luis Tyson Vazquez in 1:49 of a scheduled 10-round junior middleweight fight Saturday night at the Lucky Eagle Casino in Rochester. Chauncey Welliver of Spokane won by technical disqualification over Felipe Borjorquez after the third round of a scheduled eight-round heavyweight bout listed as a NWBA championship. Ron Pacek beat Chris Huntwork by a unanimous decision in a scheduled eight-round junior middleweight bout listed as a NWBA championship.
