Stars seize crown

The Seattle Stars baseball team capped their season Sunday by winning the Triple Crown World Series in Steamboat Springs, Colo.

The Stars, made up of 14-year-olds from Bainbridge Island, Edmonds, Issaquah, Kennewick, Mill Creek, Shoreline and Woodinville, beat the Palm Desert Tigers of California 13-3 in the championship game.

Jeremy Sage hit a three-run home run in the second inning to get the scoring started and the Stars never looked back.

Travis Snider was named the tournament’s offensive Most Valuable Player and Curt Nelson won the defensive MVP. Sage, Joey Petosa, Andrew Hutt and Jonathan Quiray were also named to the all-tournament team.

Other baseball

The Kirkland Rebels opened play yesterday in the AAU Junior Olympics in Knoxville, Tenn., with a 14-4 win over the North Carolina Eagles.

Starting pitcher Jesse Cook upped his record to 14-1, allowing just three hits.

P.J. Ross hit a three-run homer and Tim Workman drove in two runs in the five-inning game.

Rowing

The University of Washington’s Heidi Hurn, Anna Mickelson and Mary Whipple (coxswain) were named to the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association All-America first team.

• Washington State’s Corrie McGrath was named to the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association All-America second team.
