Mickelson up for award
EAST MEADOW, N.Y. — Anna Mickelson, former University of Washington rower, has been named a finalist for the 2002 Sportswoman of the Year Award, the Women's Sports Foundation announced.
Mickelson is one of 21 finalists for the national honor that includes 10 nominees from individual sports.
A product of Bellevue's Newport High School, Mickelson is one of 11 finalists from the team sports category. The list includes WNBA All-Star Sue Bird of the Seattle Storm.
One individual-sport and one team-sport athlete will receive the prestigious honor at the 2002 Annual Salute to Women in Sports awards dinner on Oct. 21 at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York.
"This is a great honor for Anna to be nominated for the Sportswoman of the Year," said Jan Harville, Washington women's crew coach. "Anna is deserving of this nomination because of her accomplishments at Washington and now with the national team."
Mickelson completed her collegiate rowing career in June by winning a gold medal in the NCAA varsity eight championship race. She is a member of the Senior National Team, which will compete at the 2002 FISA World Rowing Championships on Sept. 19-22 in Seville, Spain.
