High School Sports
Spotlight: Lynnwood High School
Seattle Times staff reporter
Address: 3001 184th St. SW, Lynwood, WA 98037
School district: Edmonds
Mascot: Royals
School colors: Black and gold
Enrollment: 1,280
League/Class: WesCo 4A South (Lynnwood is 3A for playoffs)
When it opened: 1970
Biggest rival: Meadowdale
Notable alumni: Randy Couture, seven-time world heavyweight Ultimate Fighting Champion.
Last state championship: 1995 (boys cross country)
Something unique: Officially, Lynnwood's mascot is and has always been the Chimeras, but the school's teams have gone by Royals since the start. Why? In part, according to Athletic Director Kevin Allen, because nobody is quite sure what a Chimera is. For the record, it is a fire-breathing creature from Greek mythology comprised of a lion, goat and serpent.
