Something unique: Renton, which was built on land once owned by the Duwamish tribe, did not use a nickname for its sports teams until Henry Moses starred for the school's basketball team from 1916 to 1920. Moses, the only Native American on the team, took verbal abuse from opponents, who derisively called the team the "Indians." Eventually, Moses declared that, "Since I'm a major part of this team, we might as well be called 'Indians.' " Moses' wife and the Duwamish tribe have requested that it continue to represent the school.
