Man pleads guilty in death of babysitter

The Associated Press

MOUNT VERNON — A 45-year-old transient pleaded guilty today to a charge of aggravated murder for fatally stabbing an 18-year-old baby sitter from Oklahoma.

Joseph Dale Kennedy is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 28 to life in prison without parole. The only other possible sentence for aggravated murder is the death penalty, but the family of the victim, Ingrid Jernigan, said they did not want Kennedy executed.

Jernigan was attacked Sept. 22 in this town about 55 miles north of Seattle while baby-sitting for the 5-year-old son of Kennedy’s former girlfriend, who had obtained a court order barring him from contact.

Of all the wounds on Jernigan’s body, all were shallow except the final killing slash, an autopsy showed.

Kennedy was initially charged with first-degree murder and said through his lawyer he would plead guilty even though he would face an automatic life prison term under the state’s "three strikes" law.

On Oct. 3, prosecutors decided to increase the charge to aggravated murder.
