America's Cup: Attorney friend of Conner's writes letter to OneWorld
AUCKLAND, New Zealand — Attorney Richard Scruggs, whose lawsuits against tobacco companies were featured in the Oscar-nominated film "The Insider," is assisting the New York Yacht Club's legal effort to have Seattle's OneWorld Challenge ejected from the America's Cup.
Scruggs, a friend of Stars & Stripes skipper Dennis Conner, has written to OneWorld and suggested they pull out of for "the dignity of the event."
Team Dennis Conner has refused to say whether Scruggs will represent it in its action against OneWorld, which will go before the Cup's Arbitration Panel on Dec. 7 and to an international jury on Dec. 9.
Scruggs' only involvement to date has been as the author of letters exchanged by New York with OneWorld's legal representatives.
New York and Italian challengers Prada allege OneWorld used design secrets belonging to rival teams and have asked the Arbitration Panel and jury to penalize the Seattle team for "gross multiple violations" of the America's Cup Protocol.
