America's Cup: Teams unveil boats
AUCKLAND, New Zealand — Defending champion Team New Zealand and challengers Alinghi and Oracle ended months of secrecy by unveiling their America's Cup yachts yesterday.
In quick succession, the three teams dropped the elaborate skirts that have hidden their yachts' undersides. Alinghi's SUI-64 and Oracle's USA-76, the yachts each has chosen to use in the challenger final starting Friday, revealed largely conventional design approaches — slight differences in hull shape, keels and rudders.
Team New Zealand unveiled two Cup yachts, NZL-81 and NZL-82. The champion had to unveil its yachts yesterday but does not have to decide until Feb. 10 which it will use in the 31st Cup match.
The Team New Zealand yachts were revealed to have a double hull that fits like a second skin around the stern. The development is seen by some teams and designers as a circumvention of the America's Cup rules, which prohibits hollows or irregularities in a boat's hull shape.
