WesCo roundup: Jackson cools chilly Terrace
MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — As the final seconds of the first half ticked down last night, Mountlake Terrace guard Sean Gearin lined up just inside three-point range and fired at the buzzer. His shot missed the hoop entirely, soaring out of play. That prompted a vocal contingent of Jackson supporters to chant "Air ball!" every time he touched the ball for the better part of the next quarter.
It was the story of the night for Mountlake Terrace, which was 1 for 22 from three-point range and 17 for 52 overall while visiting Jackson fans tormented the Hawks in a 49-41 Timberwolves victory.
The defeat knocked the Hawks (4-2, 6-2 overall) out of first place in the WesCo South Division.
The performance came on the heels of a win by Terrace over Lynnwood on Friday in which the Hawks made seven three-pointers.
"I can't tell them to shoot some nights and not to shoot another night," said Hawks Coach Nalin Sood. "We're not a three-point shooting team. We don't spend tons of time on that in practice."
While poor Terrace shooting helped Jackson (3-2 WesCo South, 5-2 overall) build a 25-19 halftime lead, a Timberwolves cold streak let the Hawks get back in it. Terrace opened the third quarter on a 9-0 run and didn't allow Jackson to score a basket until 4:08 remained in the quarter.
But Jackson battled back, and after finishing three quarters tied at 31, the teams were toe-to-toe most of the final quarter.
With Jackson up by a point with just under a minute remaining, the Hawks had to foul to gain possession. The Timberwolves were 11 of 11 from the free-throw line and made 10 foul shots in the final 53 seconds to pull away.
Ironically, Mountlake Terrace was also perfect from the stripe, making all six of its free throws.
"You'll never see that," Sood said. "That's where the shots went down. We made the free throws and miss the other ones. That's disappointing."
Gearin led both teams with 15 points.
