Tips for avoiding art fraud

1. Know what you are buying. Read about your field of interest and get acquainted with the prices in auction catalogs and different shops before you start buying.

2. Know your dealer. A reputable dealer will be available and well-regarded in the community. Auction houses provide guarantees to safeguard against fraudulent objects.

3. Get to know other collectors and experts through local museums and arts councils.

4. Ask for advice. Museum curators generally make themselves available to members for information. They do not, however, provide appraisals or commercial advice.

5. Don't base your purchase on certificates of authenticity or TL test certificates alone. As one curator put it: "It doesn't take too much to print up a form."
