Aleutian ferry

Ferry departures in 2003: From Kodiak to Unalaska/Dutch Harbor — May 7, June 11, July 16, Aug. 13 and Sept. 10. There is daily air service with Alaska Airlines between Anchorage and Kodiak.

Option: Passengers may board the ferry at Homer, on the Kenai Peninsula, one day earlier with each departure for Unalaska/Dutch Harbor. Travel time by ferry between Homer and Kodiak is 9-½ hours.

Fares: From Kodiak to Unalaska/Dutch Harbor — $226 each for foot passengers. A basic two-berth cabin (without bath facilities) is priced at $200 for the voyage. Fares for 2003 sailings have not been determined, but expect fares and cabin rates to increase about 10 percent.

Some things to see and do in Kodiak:

Sport fishing for halibut, salmon, steelhead, rainbow trout.

Sea kayaking.

Hiking and mountain biking.

Sightseeing by air over the mountains and glaciers of the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge.

The Alutiiq Center, in downtown Kodiak, showcasing Kodiak's ancient Alutiiq native culture.

Holy Resurrection Russian Orthodox Church, also in downtown Kodiak. The parish dates to 1749.

Baranov Museum. A former Russian fur warehouse from 1808. Believed to be the oldest surviving Russian structure in the United States.

Kodiak Military History Museum, at Fort Abercrombie State Historical Park, site of a major World War II military installation.

Some things to see and do in Unalaska/Dutch Harbor:

Unalaska's 104-year-old Russian Orthodox Holy Ascension Cathedral.

Mount Ballyhoo, site of World War II's Fort Schwatka, with remnants of wartime bunkers 1,000 feet above the Bering Sea.

Museum of the Aleutians. Excellent exhibits of the ancient Aleut culture and World War II memorabilia.

Sport fishing.

Birding. Bald eagles are as common as crows.
