Sweet swims for Mercer Island's Sussex
FEDERAL WAY — Sean Sussex finished his high-school swimming career with two brilliant performances.
The Mercer Island senior set meet records in winning the 100- and 200-yard freestyles yesterday at the Class 3A/2A state boys swim championships at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way. Sussex's 100 time was 44.19 seconds, lowering the meet record of 44.62 he set Friday in preliminaries. His 200 time was 1 minute, 38.21 seconds.
Sussex's 100 had been announced as the best time in state history, but meet officials said yesterday that Ugur Taner of Bellevue's Newport had a faster time in the first leg of a 400 relay in 1992.
Still, Sussex's titles early last night kept Mercer Island on course to defend its team title and helped cap his remarkable prep career that included five individual state championships.
