Other tournaments: Darrington (B), Brewster (1A) claim titles
Special to The Seattle Times
SPOKANE — All it took was some good shooting and great defense.
Evan Smith made his first nine shots — and finished 9 for 10 — to lead Darrington to a hot start in a 64-43 win over Shoreline Christian Saturday night in the championship game of the Class B boys state basketball tournament at the Spokane Arena.
Smith and Bryce Boyd combined for 22 points in the first half as the Loggers (23-4) rolled to a 29-16 lead.
The last time the state championship featured two teams from the west side of the state was in 1982 when Onalaska defeated Naselle. The last time two teams from the Northwest B League played for the title was 1955, with Darrington defeating Bainbridge.
Darrington also won the 1957 championship, beating Valley (Menlo).
It was the best finish for the Crusaders, who finished as high as eighth in three previous trips to the state tournament.
Garth Brandal, a 6-2 junior, led Shoreline Christian (22-6) with 17 points.
Class 1A boys
Brewster 69, Seattle Christian 44 — The top-ranked Bears (28-0) capped a perfect season with their first Class 1A boys basketball championship — after five in Class B — by manhandling second-ranked Seattle Christian (25-2) at the Yakima Valley SunDome.
Most Valuable Player David Pendergraft collected 26 points, 17 rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Nick Lindseth led Seattle Christian with 17 points and Joel Duby added 10.
