Yesterday's games

Kennewick 38, Monroe 32

The upstart Bearcats (19-6) had upset on their minds, leading 10-5 in the first quarter and 27-25 with just over four minutes left. But Leilani Mitchell started a 12-3 run that put No. 6 Kennewick in control. Mitchell made four of five free throws during the stretch and finished with a game-high 14 points.

Monroe had 27 turnovers, Kennewick (23-3) only seven. Mitchell, a 5-foot-5 guard headed for Idaho, was a pest with six steals.

Kirsten Thompson, a 6-6 sophomore, scored the Bearcats' first two baskets, but quickly got into foul trouble and played just 4-1/2 minutes in the first half. She finished with nine points and three rebounds. Karissa Barnes had eight points and 12 boards for Monroe, which outrebounded Kennewick 48-28.

Central Valley 59, Kentlake 45

Emily Westerberg carried the defending champions into the quarterfinals with 26 points and 10 rebounds as they handed the Falcons (23-3) their first in-state loss of the season and snapped their 18-game winning streak.

Westerberg, a 6-2 senior and Arizona State signee, scored eight straight points in the fourth quarter for the top-ranked Bears (25-1).

No. 4 Kentlake trailed only 34-30 with two minutes left in the third quarter, but it was all CV after that. The Bears scored the final 10 points of the period, capped by three-point plays by Joy Rowe, who scored 18 points, and Caitlin Courchaine.

"I don't fault our kids' effort at all," said Kentlake Coach Chris Carr, who clearly was unhappy with the officiating and picked up a technical foul midway through the fourth quarter. "We just didn't hit our shots when we needed to."

Shuree Hyatt led Kentlake with 19 points.

Lake Stevens 58, Central Kitsap 46

The Vikings (19-6) missed their first eight shots, fell behind 6-0 and trailed 10-9 to start the second period. Lake Stevens then used a 9-0 run in the second quarter to lead 31-22 at halftime, and was up 41-25 with 5:10 left in the third.

But the Cougars (21-7) stuck around. A 7-0 spurt whittled the gap to nine and it was 42-34 going into the final period. The Vikings reasserted themselves by starting the fourth with a 9-2 run. Lake Stevens made seven of 12 free throws in the final 2:25 to seal the win.

Maisie Todd had a terrific all-around game for Lake Stevens with 15 points, 13 rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Adria Layne led Central Kitsap with 16 points, and Nicole Zygmontowicz had 15 points and nine rebounds.

Garfield 55, Jefferson 29

Coach Joyce Walker said she blasted her team at halftime, when the Bulldogs led 20-18, and questioned whether they were just happy to be at the tournament.

Apparently, they weren't.

The No. 9 Bulldogs (20-5) responded by blasting Jefferson with a 25-0 run to close the third quarter. Delany Conway scored 11 of her game-high 20 points during the spree, including three of her four three-pointers. The Raiders (18-8) were held scoreless for the final 6-1/2 minutes of the quarter.

Conway, a 6-foot senior, buried eight of 19 shots, including four of nine threes.

Malia O'Neal added 15 points, five steals, four assists and three rebounds, and Samantha Tinned had nine points and 13 rebounds for the Bulldogs. Chelsea Hunt led Jefferson with nine points, 13 rebounds and three assists.

Prairie 62, Lewis and Clark 42

Andrea Sitton scored six of her 14 points in a 72-second span of the fourth quarter to start a 10-0 Falcons run that finally put the Tigers away. Jessica Menkens had the other two baskets during the spurt and finished with a game-high 24 points. She also had six rebounds, three steals and two assists.

The third-ranked Falcons (25-2) struggled offensively early, then opened a 42-28 lead in the third period. But Brittany O'Neal opened the fourth with a three-pointer for the Tigers (20-7) and Katy Baker followed with a three-point play that cut the deficit to eight before Sitton came to life.

Baker led L-C with 13 points and five rebounds.

Pasco 50, Olympia 22

Only a basket with 90 seconds left kept Olympia (18-8) from tying the tournament record for fewest points in a game.

Olympia was held to 20-percent shooting (6 for 30) and missed all nine three-point attempts. Pasco shot 40 percent (22 for 54) but made only 2 of 16 three-point tries.

The Bulldogs' (25-1) only loss was to Kennewick, a team they defeated 45-34 to win the East Region title. Pasco beat Kennewick three of four times this season.

Enumclaw 67, Oak Harbor 46

Brittney Osborn and Brianna Thompson combined for 18 points in the opening quarter as the Hornets sizzled from the start. Osborn finished with a season-high 31 points, hitting 12 of 18 shots. Thompson had 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds.

Enumclaw (22-4) shot 43.8 percent in the first half, then got even hotter, hitting 51.9 percent in the second.

"When you get blitzed by a team like that, you just have to say, 'Hey, we got beat by a better team,' " Oak Harbor Coach Brett McLeod said.

Heidi McNeill scored 14 of her 23 points in the second half for the Wildcats (17-7). Shirley Spears, who picked up three early fouls, was held to seven.

Redmond 56, Puyallup 51 (OT)

Puyallup gave the unbeaten Mustangs (24-0) all they could handle and had a chance to win in regulation, but failed to get a shot off after a timeout as it turned the ball over with four seconds to play. Redmond's Mackenzie Flynn missed a half-court shot at the buzzer, leaving it 47-all.

Flynn, a sophomore, stepped up big in the extra period, scoring six of the Mustangs' nine points. And teammate Claire Pallansch dominated the boards, piling up 17 rebounds — 11 at the offensive end.

Puyallup Coach Collette Stewart was thrilled with her team's effort.

"I'm really proud of my kids," she said. "We played that team hard."

Megan Clarno led the Vikings (21-5) with 17 points and eight rebounds.
