Vlaski falls in Pac-10 singles title game
OJAI, Calif. — Washington sophomore Alex Vlaski fell in the men's singles title match at the Pac-10 tennis championships yesterday, 6-4, 6-2 to UCLA's Marcin Matkowski.
Matkowski, the top-seeded player entering the tournament handed Vlaski his second straight loss in the conference title match. Last year, UCLA freshman Rodrigo Grilli beat Vlaski in the title game.
Matkowski beat Vlaski in their previous meeting this season, 6-2, 6-2 in Los Angeles.
Softball
Freshman Sarah Hyatt hit a game-ending, three-run home run in the eighth inning as No. 4 Washington beat No. 9 California 5-2 in Pac-10 action at Husky Softball Stadium.
The Huskies (7-7 Pac-10, 40-9-1) took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on three hits and a California (8-7, 39-14) error. With two outs, Jaime Clark walked. Kristen Rivera and Kathy Fiske each singled. The next batter, Dena Tyson, hit the ball up the middle. Chelsea Spencer then dropped the throw to her at second base. Clark and Rivera scored.
Cal scored a run in the fifth, then tied the score in the seventh. Lindsay James hit an RBI single off Washington reliever Tia Bollinger, scoring Vicky Galindo from second.
Bollinger (22-2) allowed four hits in two innings.
• Senior Erica Delgado hit a one-out single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh as Central Washington swept Saint Martin's in a doubleheader 6-5. The Wildcats (12-12 Great Northwest Athletic Conference, 17-18) won Game 1, 4-1.
Baseball
Greg Isaacson had three hits, including a double and a homer, as Washington took a 2-1 Pac-10 series win over visitor Cal, beating the Golden Bears 11-3.
Right-hander Clay Johnson (4-2) allowed one run on six hits in six innings to get the win for the Huskies (6-6, 28-13). Cal fell to 9-9, 25-21.
In the fifth, UW's Chad Boudon hit his 17th home run. He moved into sole possession of second on the team's all-time, single-season list, and is two short of the all-time mark, set by Dominic Woody in 1999.
• Arizona swept its three-game Pac-10 series with Washington State, routing the Cougars 25-0 in Tempe, Ariz.
The Sun Devils (10-5, 42-9) had 24 hits off four Washington State (4-11, 13-29) pitchers. They scored 10 runs in the first, six runs in the second and had five runs in the eighth.
• Brian Gilmore hit a solo home run to right field with one out in the bottom of the 11th inning to give Willamette (16-6 Northwest Conference, 20-12) a 5-4 win over Puget Sound (8-12, 14-18) in Salem, Ore.
Notes
• The Cougars women's varsity eight and second varsity eight each won at the Clemson Classic in South Carolina. The varsity eight won in 6 minutes, 56.5 seconds, followed by Tennessee in 6:58.30. The second varsity finished in 6:54.60, one-tenth of a second ahead of the Volunteers.
• Conal Groom (lightweight single sculls) and J. Sloan DuRoss (open single sculls) of Seattle's Pocock Rowing Center finished second and third, respectively in their finals at the National Selection Regatta on Lake Mercer in Princeton, N.J. Both earned U.S. national team spots.
