Junior crews claim medals at nationals
CINCINNATI — Three local crews — Seattle's Green Lake Crew, Lakeside School, and Everett Rowing Association — took home medals in the finals of USRowing Youth Invitational national rowing regatta yesterday on Lake Harsha.
Green Lake Crew finished second in the junior men's eight finals. Blair Wilson (coxswain), Pat Allen, Will Lippitt, Chris Heim, Ben Hudson, Abe Pursell, John Chevigny, Yurij Rudensky and Evan Christie took silver after completing the 2,000-meter course in 5 minutes, 54.31 seconds. Cincinnati Junior Rowing Club, host of the event, finished in 5:53.82, .49 seconds ahead of Green Lake.
In the junior women's four with coxswain, Lakeside School Crew's Mollie Amkraut (coxswain), Christine Coxon, Caitlin Parker, Betsy McCormick and Linnea Rooke earned the bronze, finishing in 7:39.88, edging local rival Mt. Baker Rowing and Sailing Center by .42 seconds. Winsor (Boston) won the gold in 7:24.02.
Everett also beat out a local rival for a bronze medal, edging Green Lake in the junior men's lightweight eight. The Everett crew — Marc Quast (coxswain), Patrick Hebner, Andrew Ratzke, Jacob Simons, Jeff Williams, Todd Hoshor, Dennis Seematter, James Daoust and Adam Quast — finished third in 6:13.30, and Green Lake was fourth in 6:16.97.
In the junior women's eight, Everett and Redmond's Sammamish Rowing Association finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
Lillibridge named UW MVP
Brent Lillibridge won the Bill Hutchinson Most Valuable Player Award and the Wilson Gaw Top Hitter Award at the Washington baseball team's postseason awards banquet.
Lillibridge, a center fielder from Jackson High in Everett, led the Huskies with a .388 batting average and a freshman-record 13 home runs. The MVP award was voted on by his teammates.
In other team awards, senior shortstop Tila Reynolds and junior third baseman John Otness were named team captains, senior relief pitcher Scott Robertson won the Most Inspirational Award and junior second baseman Greg Isaacson received the Jerry Thornton Unsung Hero Award. Sophomore catcher Aaron Hathaway earned the team's Gold Glove, and sophomore reliever Will Fenton was named Outstanding Pitcher.
