Heytvelt spurns UW, others for Gonzaga
Josh Heytvelt, whose recruitment by Washington assistant Cameron Dollar got the Huskies in trouble with the NCAA, has made an oral commitment to play basketball for Gonzaga in 2004.
The 6-foot-9 forward, who will be a senior this fall at Clarkston High School, also received offers from Kansas, Arizona, Oregon, Washington State and Washington. Heytvelt averaged 20.1 points per game last season.
Local rowers qualify for Pan Am Games
INDIANAPOLIS — Two local crews earned berths in the Pan American Games yesterday during trials at Eagle Creek Park, while one duo forced a tiebreaking final today.
In the lightweight men's double sculls, Tyler Peterson and Evan Jacobs of Lake Washington Crew stroked to first place and a spot on the Pan American team in a time of 7:13.17.
The Potomac Boat Club/Pocock Rowing Center boat of Wendy Campanella, Jen Edwards, Sarah Hirst and Anne Finke also made the team, winning the lightweight women's quadruple sculls in 7:26.83.
Pocock's Sloan DuRoss and Conal Groom forced a third final today by beating Penn AC's Jack Nunn and Dana Schmunk by 0.04 seconds in the men's double sculls. The Pocock crew clocked a 7:05.47.
Pocock's Carol Skricki and Anne Browning placed second in the women's double sculls. Potomac/Pocock's Julie Nichols and Ale Phillips were third in the lightweight women's double sculls.
The Pan American Games are Aug. 4-10 on Rincon Lake in the Dominican Republic.

• Amy Wang of Glendale Country Club shot 1-over-par 72 to maintain a three-shot lead at the 10th Washington State Women's Amateur Championship in Longview. Wang was 1-over 143 after two rounds. In the senior division, Ann Swanson of Sand Point shot 82 but held a one-shot advantage over Sue Ursino of Sahalee.
• Jeff Coston of Semiahmoo shot a 1-under-par 71 and maintained a two-stroke lead over Todd Erwin after two rounds of the Oregon Open in West Linn.
• Alex Prugh of Spokane shot a course-record 6-under-par 66 to take a three-stroke lead over Dan Potter of Hayden Lake, Idaho, after the first round of the Washington State Golf Association Men's Amateur Championship at Homestead Farms Golf Resort in Lynden.
• Evergreen State College has signed three players to its women's basketball team: Jenny Olson (Deer Park), Shakira Rule (Sacramento) and Liz Rizza (Eugene, Ore.).
