Notebook: Women's Amateur won by future Husky

LONGVIEW — Amy Wang shot a 2-over-par 73 to claim the 10th Washington State Women's Amateur Championship yesterday at Longview Country Club.

Wang's three-day total of 3-over 216 beat Mary Kate Morgan of Longview CC by six shots.

Wang, a member of Glendale Country Club, will golf for the University of Washington in the fall.

In the senior division, Sue Ursino of Sahalee won by 11 shots. She had a 236.

Pocock boat wins Pan Am berth

INDIANAPOLIS — Pocock Rowing Center's Sloan DuRoss and Conal Groom pulled away from the Princeton/Penn AC duo of Chris Grothkopp and Bill Martin-Doyle in the final 1,000 meters to win the third and decisive final of the men's double sculls at the Pan American Games Team Trials at Eagle Creek Park.

DuRoss and Groom (6:43.72) won by 4.01 seconds. They will join 11 other boats on the U.S. team at the Pan American Games, Aug. 4-10 on Rincon Lake in the Dominican Republic.

UW 17th in Director's Cup

Washington placed 17th in the final standings of the 2003 Director's Cup, presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics to the top collegiate athletic programs in the nation.

Stanford earned its record ninth consecutive title, on the strength of 16 top-10 finishes in NCAA competition. Washington State was 55th.

Dan Potter of the Washington golf team and Jordan Madison of Canyon Lakes Golf Club shared the lead after the second round of the Washington State Golf Association's Men's Amateur Championship at Homestead Farms Golf Resort in Lynden. Both were at 2-under-par 142.

Dan Heltsley has resigned as athletic director at Kentlake High School to become athletic director for the Bethel School District.

Emily Bailey of Everett Rowing Association has signed to row for the University of Tulsa. Bailey spent two years as a member of the lightweight crew and one year on the open-weight team.
