Miss Bud, Villwock can't get past start
EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Mitch Evans got the U-3 Master Tire hydroplane out to a big lead at the start of the Thunder on the Ohio and won easily yesterday, while six-time defending champion Miss Budweiser, driven by Dave Villwock of Auburn, failed to start.
The victory on the Ohio River course was the first since 1989 — anywhere — for the only piston-powered craft still competing in the unlimited hydroplane series.
The Master Tire finished at an average speed of 140.515 mph, almost 3 mph faster than the U-9 WABX 107.5. Mike Weber's U-10 Miss EMCOR was third at 130.463.
The Budweiser, which won one of its three heat races, lost a propeller and failed to start the finals.
The Thunder was the first race in the unlimited series this season. The boats head upriver for the Madison Regatta next weekend.
Lukevich will walk on at Washington
Robert Lukevich, a lineman who will be a senior this fall at Bishop Blanchet High School, told Washington coaches he will attend UW as a walk-on.
Lukevich told the Huskies of his decision last week at the conclusion of the Rick Neuheisel football camp at UW.
Lukevich, 6 feet 2 and 230 pounds, is a center and long snapper at Bishop Blanchet. He also considered Oregon and Air Force.
Mora inducted into Louisiana Hall of Fame
NATCHITOCHES, La. — Jim Mora, a former assistant with the Seahawks and Washington Huskies, was rewarded for introducing the New Orleans Saints to winning.
The former Saints coach, who compiled a 93-78 record with New Orleans, was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday.
"It's a real honor," Mora said.
Bainbridge junior rower third at nationals
PRINCETON, N.J. — Francis Toglia, 16, a member of the Bainbridge Island Rowing Club, finished third in the singles event at the men's Junior National Team Trials.
Rick Visinski of the Saugatuck (Ct.) Rowing Club took first place in 7 minutes, 11.58 seconds. John Fetter of the Haverford School (Pa.) was second in 7:23.9, and Toglia was third in 7:43.2.
